Vigorous exercise and dietary changes in combination are an effective method to enhance overall health. Using a wheelchair under low impact conditions is an efficient mode of travel and if exercise is of sufficient duration may provide cardiovascular benefits. There are many circumstances where an opportunity for an extended aerobic wheelchair workout is not practical. Walking treadmills were developed for similar reasons: inclimate hot, cold, rainy or snowy weather; nightime safety concerns; no convenient outside walkways; or just the desire to exercise indoors and watch television!
Although modern medical research has now validated common sense with regard to aerobic exercise and health its practical implimentation for manual wheelchair users has been especially challenging. Current ramp & roller wheelchair devices take up lots of space, are generally difficult to mount and require straps or clamps to stabilize the wheelchair. Heath clubs generally have limited space for wheelchairs and few have accessible or adapted equipment. The end result is inadequate aerobic exercise for many manual wheelchair users who are also interested in improving their health.
